In today’s tutorial, I am going to show you how I created a variation of the petals in the last flower we made, Six Petal Flower.
Instead of using a pearl bead in the initial setup, I replaced it with an 8/0 seed bead. I hope you can see from the photo that the cup shape is much less pronounced but has a lovely heart shapes curve.
I am still working on the final floral for this petal, which will be called Trillium once published. So let’s dive into the materials used in this lesson so we can get started.

The Set-Up
The setup for this petal is exactly the same as the Six Petal flower setup, with the exception of using an 8/0 bead in place of the pearl.
Two 8/0 beads are ladder stitched together and reinforced 2 to 3 times.
Pick up an A – C – B – A. Skip over the top three beads and sew back through the A towards the base. Pull snug against the base bead and sew bach through the base A from the other side.
Notice in the photo that there is a thread coming out of the top A in the ladder from both sides connecting the Picot unit.
Round 1
Now we will set up for Peyote stitch.
Pick up an A and four C. Pass up through the C on the same side of the Picot as your working thread.
Pick up an C bead and sew through the 8/0 at the top.
Pick up a C and sew down through the C on the other side of the picot.
Pick up four C and an A. Sew through the both A’s at the bottom.
Round 2
Now we begin Peyote stitch. Pick up a B bead. Skip over one C and sew through the next.
Repeat once. Pick up a B and sew up through the C on the side of the Picot.
Pick up four B – A – B. Sew down through the C on the other side to form another picot.
Take three peyote stitches on this side using B beads.
As you add the last peyote stitch, sew through all three 8/0 beads at the bottom. This will end the round and serve as the step up.
Round 3
Take two 2 drop peyote stitches using B beads.
Take two single peyote stitches using B, one will go up through the B on this side of the picot.
Pick up a B and sew through the 8/0 at the top of the picot.
Pick up a B and sew down through the B on the other side.
Take one more single peyote stitch.
Take two 2 drop peyote stitches using B beads with the last stitch going through all three 8/0’s at the bottom.
Step up through both beads of the first 2 drop stitch of the round.
Round 4
This is a single bead peyote round. Just remember to sew through both beads of the 2 drop sets of the previous round.
In this round, add another picot at the top using B – A – B.
After adding the last bead through the 2 drop set, sew through the three 8/0’s at the bottom to close the round. This counts as the step up again.
Round 5
Take two 2 drop peyote stitches using C beads. Position the beads so that they sit on top of the beads on the base to really form the cup shape on this end of the petal.
Take three single stitches using C beads.
At the top, pick up a C and sew through the 8/0 of the picot. Pick up a C and sew down through the B on this side of the picot.
Take three more single stitches using C beads.
Round 6
One last round of single drop peyote using C beads. Remember to sew through both beads of your 2 drop sets as you work.
Add one more picot at the top using C- B – C beads.
After adding the last bead, we need to bridge the gap over the three 8/0’s at the bottom.
Pick up a C and dw through the 8/0 on the center of the three.
Pick up a C and sew through the next 2 drop stitch.
Step up into the first bead added in this round.
Round 7
At the top, pick up a 15/0 and sew through the B.
To add an accent tip to our petal, pick up a 15/0 and pass back through the 11/0 once more. This square stitches the bead at the top.
Come through the 15/0 and back through the 11/0 once again to reinforce.
Finish up the row taking single and 2 drop stitches where applicable.
Here is a loot at the finished petals. For the upcoming project I will used three petals per flower. As you can see I have a few more to make.
I think this lesson would also make for some very precious leaves to add to our floral garden bead work such as clovers or ivy.
