What is Jewelry Design Exactly.....

According to Wikipedia, “Jewelry design is the art or profession of designing and creating jewelry. … The art has taken many forms throughout the centuries, from the simple bead work of ancient times to the sophisticated metalworking and gem cutting known in the modern day.”

Jewelry consists of decorative items worn for personal adornment, such as Brooches, Rings, Necklaces, Earrings, Pendants, Bracelets, Tie Pins and Cuff Links.

Jewelry may be attached to the body or the clothes.

Jewelry designers work with precious metals, diamonds, beads and gemstones to create wearable pieces of art.

jewelry designer may create one-of-a-kind pieces for high-end jewelers or an entire line for a mass-market fashion designer.

They may also sell their jewelry themselves.

Line or Collection

Both line and collection are common terms in the fashion and jewelry industries.

A line refers exclusively to all of the pieces a designer produces for a specific category within his or her company.

A collection refers to a production of different styles within a line for that same company.

  • Men’s Line
  • Women’s Line
  • Unisex Line
  • Children’s Line
  • Pet’s Line

Jewelry lines can first be labeled by who the intended wearer or recipient is.

Next, each of these lines are further divided by the type of jewelry, such as rings, pendants etc.

From the diagram above, you can see that I have defined five lines of women’s jewelry.

  • Rings
  • Earrings
  • Bracelets
  • Necklaces and Pendants
  • Brooches

Beneath each line, are examples of some of the different types of collections that each line can branch into.

There are no set rules for defining your lines and collections.  You can organize and name them to suit your style, seasons or even by technique.

As the designer, you get to decide what your lines and collections will consist of.

Feel free to use this blank diagram to play around with the concept of Lines and Collections for your business.

Now we have a basic understanding of the difference between a line and a collection.

For purposes of this series, I will focus on traditional lines of women’s jewelry and seasonal collections.

In the next post, we are going to take an in-depth look at the characteristics of a jewelry collection.
