To date, we explored the basic tools, media and design fundamentals.
We have also begun to explore the fashion forecasts and trends for 2020.
In the last post, we took and in-depth look into the Pantone Color Institute’s color of the year and their palettes for Spring and Summer for NY and London.
Today, we will take an in-depth look into the the specific Jewelry Trends for Spring/Summer 2020 forecast by Harper’s Bazaar, Forbes and Vogue.
Harper's Bazaar Jewelry Trends
Each year, during fashion shows, there are trends that stand out.
According to Harper’s Bazaar, there are five big trends this year, that designers need to be aware of.
- Bright Colors
- The Single Earring
- Over-size Chains
- Pearls
- Big Hoops
1. Bright Colorful Jewelry
Designers brought on an explosion of color for Spring 2020’s jewelry. There were bright floral and beaded pieces, gemstones and mismatched colors.

Chains got bigger and bigger on the spring runways, from giant sparkling versions (some complete with matching chain earrings) to layered over-sized chain necklaces with beaded ones.

5. Big Hoops
Hoop earrings never really left, but get ready to see them multiply in size next season. Proenza sent a crop of power hoops down its runway—thick, gold, and double-hooped for extra measure, while designers like Oscar de la Renta explored the over-sized look using different materials.
Vogue Jewelry Trends
Vogue takes a look at the jewelry trends spotted on the runways of the Spring/Summer 2020 fashion shows from New York to London, Milan to Paris.
Next summer will undoubtedly be marked by a wave of cool and upgraded jewelry including giant shells, wild animals, mini bags worn like jewelry and chokers in the form of chains.
1. Giant shells
They made their entrance several season ago, finding their way onto the lobes of models in colored money cowry, as mini shell anklets or trophy beach necklaces, and since then they have never left us. Next summer, the trend will see shell jewellery take on extra-large, almost exaggerated, proportions, No more dainty shells or surfer-like pendants, this time it will be a statement piece or nothing at all.
2. Flower Power
An explosion of flowers that heralds the arrival of spring brings itself into our necklaces, brooches and earrings in large-as-you-like proportions. Expect to see bunches of tailor-made treasures to embrace your inner country girl this fall.
3. Mini Jewelry Bag
Jacquemus had set the trend by presenting its Spring/Summer collection last June in a Provençal lavender field. The the flagship piece of the collection, the Chiquito bag appeared as a mini version to wear around the neck. A few months later, the trend was confirmed during Fashion Week, particularly at Dolce&Gabanna and Fendi, bringing the mini bag into the jewelry section.
4. Practical utility
From credit card earrings to lighters and glasses worn as necklaces, Spring/Summer 2020 saw many reinterpretations of everyday objects designed by creators to give a second life to these objects whose fashion potential we would sometimes never have imagined.
5. Bourgeois clothing chain
Playing with the the bourgeoisie norm, the châtelaine (an 18th century accessory worn on the belt by lords and ladies of the manor) has been reinvented by breaking the rules of the chic wardrobe, while being places in wide links on a belted blazer. More seriously, the clothing chain comes to dress the collar of a shirt to upgrade a classic look.
6. Natural Stones
Walking in the footsteps of the wellness wave that has been shaking the jewel sphere for several years, celebrating the benefits of stones, the designers have come back to gems in their raw state, for a silhouette full of good vibes.
7. All you need is love
Subtly, expresivelys or passionately… how about we declare our love simply with a piece of jewelry? Either super sized version or covered in diamonds, the giant heart was spotted at Balenciaga, Chanel or Marc Jacobs. At Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello, the heart pendant was worn on bare skin, right on the heart itself.
8. Into the wild
Wild animals, coming straight from the Savannah or the jungle, are to be taken this season (literally) in statement jewelry, to assert your wild side. In cuffs, necklaces or earrings, the creators have covered then in gold, diamonds or precious stones for an even more unique wildlife collection.
9. The chain choker
Two-toned at Chloé, as a thick link version by Bottega Veneta or revisiting its flagship anchor chain link at Hermès, the link collar will be worn close to the neck like a choker this season. This trend has already adopted in advance by all the fashion-forward guests leaving the shows this year.
10. Girl with a pearl
A Parisian woman’s favorite jewel, the irregular baroque pearl or the pearled ball with perfect edges is found on the models’ lobes and necks, like an eternal piece that you will never get tired of.

Forbes Jewelry Forecast
New York Fashion Week also featured some alluring fashion creators collaborating with independent jewelry designers that are on point or ahead of the curve. The jewelry we are talking about continues to go forward and have a strong presence on both the runways and in the jewelry studios.
Here is a short list of the jewelry themes spotted by Forbes on the runways this year.
1. Having A Ball
From the runway to the studios, jewelry designers continue to orbit around three dimensional round shapes. Inspired by everything from planetary spheres, magical inspired crystal balls and sparkly Christmas ornaments, these designs take shape in different interpretations, from lockets to long drop earrings to pendants and charms.
2. All Choked Up
Chokers are back for Spring 2020. I’m not talking about the fine delicate stackable chokers of a few seasons ago which continue to be worn layering staples. These are statement chokers –hard powerful silhouettes that curve around the neck in gold. They also translate into choker length necklaces that are strong in shape but flexible with multiple dangles accenting the entire piece. It’s a look which says “go bold or go home”.
3. Going Long
If you prefer a languid sexy long necklace that dips and drapes, there are myriad style lariat, bolo and elongated Y-necklaces that will provide you with the look you want. Many of these can also do double duty and get wrapped around the wrist multiple times.
4. Bohemian Rhapsody
Mix flowing print dress, and jewelry that references Victorian times with a dash of whimsy and edgy femininity thrown it and you get a modern bohemian feeling in both the clothes and the jewelry. Cameos and intaglios have both hit the current jewelry scene and Julie Wolfe’s combination of elements creates a contemporary twist while Amedeo offers up their usual irreverent styles
5. By The Seashore
Spring/summer 2020 looks to the sea and sand for inspiration with found objects mixed together in charm necklaces and braclet and linear earrings. Ulla Johnson collaborated with London-based designer Grainne Morton for some of her oceanic looks.
6. Part of The Tribe
A sophisticated sensual take on organic tribal influences permeated the jewelry at the shows. Designers are committed to ethical practices and sustainability.
This wraps up my summary of the Jewelry trends and forecasts this year from Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue and Forbes online articles.
As you can see, there is plenty to consider when we begin to design our own collections and lines of jewelry this year.
